There have been a couple points in my life where I felt a major shift in the person I am and the direction I want to go in life. One of those points was when I was introduced to Alvin Scheresky, the man who first started this mill. Alvin was a wealth of knowledge on many topics, but the one I find most interesting is health & healing. Whenever we would talk on the phone, I'd constantly be taking notes. He introduced me to Brix and calcium testing for my soil. He taught me that flax is best consumed ground fresh, as it will start to go rancid as soon as it's ground. He was the first person to teach me how to test my pH, and how to balance it if it's out of whack. A quarter teaspoon baking soda in water, in case you were wondering. And I can tell you from experience, it works!
Alvin's vast knowledge of all topics health related sparked an interest in me. I've tried more vitamins, supplements, powders, smoothies, detox teas and tinctures than I can count in the last couple years. Learning more about health and how the body can heal itself has quickly become a passion for me, and one that doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. Come to the mill and you have a cold? Here, take this oregano! Are you having trouble sleeping? Here, take this - it should help! These are the things I love to do now. That wasn't something I ever did before. I used to think very little about food and how it affects the body, now I think about it frequently.
This change in thinking can be attributed to a few things, but one of the main factors was meeting Mr. Alvin Scheresky. Alvin started the mill back in the 1960s, and it was then known as Scheresky Mill. He grew all the grain, milled all the flour, and delivered a lot of it out to the west coast personally in his own pick-up truck. He had customers across Canada who loved his products and some of those customers still support the mill today. He started this mill with his own two hands, and I find it so incredible that some 60 years later, the company is still alive and well. It changed hands in the early 2000s once more before basically falling in to my lap, and before me was run by Ray & Marianne Aspinall. Ray and Marianne also had a huge influence on me and helped facilitate my change in thinking. They are also passionate about all things health. Marianne taught me that if you take a lysine supplement, it will help keep away cold sores. Ray taught me about the threat of GM alfalfa and how important it is to take care of the body that I inhabit. I spent countless hours chatting with both of them about all the problems with our world, not just related to grain and agriculture but related to all things.
I've had many other influences to help facilitate this change in me, most notably my dad who has taught me just about everything I know about organic farming. But for the purpose of this blog, these three are the most important. It's an honour to have the opportunity to run the company that is built solely on their blood, sweat and tears. It makes me feel like this company is something precious, something to be cherished - and something I want to carry on for many years to come. The people who built this mill are good, solid, hard working and compassionate people. Their main goal in running an organic mill was simply to make the world a healthier and happier place. That is the same goal that still drives me today.
Daybreak Mill is flourishing, and I could not be happier about that. I have a team of amazing people working with me and like one of my girls Jolie said, "every day is the best day at the mill!". We're a team of happy, healthy people and we love sharing that with our customers.
I am confident in saying that we produce quality flour and grain. Our grains are grown with love, milled with care, and packaged by laughing ladies. Feedback from our customers tells me that our grain products are helping people to lead healthier lives. Ancient and heritage grains are where it's at, seriously. Our bodies benefit greatly when we feed them with food they can recognize. When we get back to food how nature intended it, it's amazing how we can flourish. It's also amazing what flourishing humans are capable of! I like to imagine a world where we all flourish and realize our greatness, because it's in all of us. Some of us just need more of a kick in the pants than a gentle nudge to realize it.
Daybreak Mill is ever growing and ever changing. We want to continue supplying you with quality products to help you feel your best, and we are adding even more great products in the near future. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!
Happiness and Health Always,
